Tinnitus and the Shenmen / migraine piercing?

Ringing in the ears, or buzzing and humming, may be familiar to many. It can have many names; what they have in common may be the underlying cause. Since ringing in the ears is a symptom of many kinds of problems, it is worth seeing a doctor if the complaint does not go away within a few days. After that it will be easier to do something about the ringing, and you can choose the therapeutic method that suits you.

Read on and find out more about tinnitus!

What is ringing in the ears a symptom of?

First of all, it is important for me to note that ringing in the ears may point to many problems, and diagnosing it is a task for a medical specialist. So before you decide on any form of treatment, find out the cause behind your complaint!

piercing for tinnitus

Ringing in the ears can be triggered by:

  • lasting and severe stress
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • jaw joint problems (a common cause)
  • it is more likely to occur with old age
  • a build-up of earwax
  • Ménière’s syndrome
  • autoimmune diseases
  • a foreign body in the ear canal
  • injuries to the head or neck
  • noise damage
  • problems with the growth of the ear bones
  • ear infections
  • it can also be a side effect of certain medications
  • disturbed blood supply to the brain
  • changes in the cervical vertebrae
  • hormonal diseases (e.g. an underactive thyroid)
  • cardiovascular diseases (e.g. high blood pressure)
  • anaemia
  • excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption
  • trace element deficiency (mainly zinc)

So you can see that ringing in the ears can be triggered by many causes. After the diagnosis, you can decide for yourself how you would like to tackle the ringing in your ears. Let’s look at your options along the alternative path!

A piercing for tinnitus?

Our guests have given positive opinions about two piercings for tinnitus. To decide which one you may need, I can help with the preliminary assessment I carry out before the piercing.

Chinese medicine established the meridian lines, the channels along which energy (“chee”) flows. We can influence the meridians by pressing or piercing certain points.

The Shenmen and the migraine piercing are also placed at such points.

But let’s see what there is to know about these wellbeing body jewels!

Shenmen piercing

Traditional Chinese Medicine basically distinguishes, in the ear, 5 main acupuncture points, known as NADA points , and the best known of these is the Shenmen point. The word Shenmen means “Divine gate”. By stimulating the special point located in the uppermost segment of the auricle, a calm, relaxed state can be achieved.

Many have reported that it was effective not only against ringing in the ears , this piercing also helped our guests with the following problems:

· headaches

· joint pain

· lasting stress

· allergy

· sleep problems

· addiction/quitting

· dizziness

A study has also shown its effect on tinnitus

A In a 2009 study by Medical Acupuncture examined the effects of ear acupressure on tinnitus. Based on the results, tinnitus decreased with pressure on the ear acupressure points (including the Shenmen point), but this result is not significant, so further research on the topic would be needed.

Migraine piercing – not only for migraine

A The migraine piercing is placed in the fold above the ear canal, so it keeps the 10th cranial nerve, called the vagus, under constant stimulation. For many, this constant stimulation had a pain-relieving, calming and anxiety-reducing effect. Our guests’ headache complaints were often accompanied by ringing in the ears, so the migraine piercing was also a great help to them.

The migraine piercing has also been found beneficial for the following headaches:

· weather-sensitive

· hormonal

· cluster

· tension

This is how the piercing is inserted

As I mentioned above, at the Medical Piercing studio I carry out an assessment before the piercing in order to establish which wellbeing body jewel you may need for ringing in the ears. I ask you about your other complaints unrelated to the ringing and your medical history, and I also assess the condition of your ear. Here, for example, I also look into how sensitive you are to pain and whether you have ever fainted.

This is followed by pinpoint-accurate point location, on the basis of which we can be sure that the chosen piercing goes in the right place. After all this, the piercing itself takes only a few moments. My guests describe the related pain like this: “as if some insect had just stung me”, which passed almost immediately after the piercing was inserted.

By the way, the piercing is first a jewel made of medical-grade metal, which I disinfect in an autoclave at the studio.

Once the jewellery is in place, we chat a little more, while you are sitting in the chair, to make sure that everything is fine with you. At this point we discuss all the further important tasks you need to follow during the healing time of the migraine piercing. Don’t worry about not being able to remember them all, because later, among other things, you will receive information about this by e-mail too.

I won’t let go of your hand! After two weeks I will call you to ask whether everything is fine with youand whether you feel the positive effects of the piercing. If not, under the guarantee we arrange a new appointment to do the migraine piercing in your other ear as well.

The price of piercings for tinnitus

* The total number of piercings was higher than this. The statistic is not official. The piercing is not an officially recognised therapeutic device but a wellbeing piece of jewellery, whose effectiveness is based on experience and feedback.
