Shenmen piercing: what to do if it becomes inflamed!

After the piercing, every piercing should be cared for regularly and thoroughly. Guidance on this is usually given individually by the piercing specialist, but complications can occur even when the instructions are followed. An inflamed Shenmen piercing is no joke! It deserves close attention.

But what can the symptoms of an inflamed Shenmen piercing be, and why can it develop? What can you do if this complication occurs? How is the piercing done at our studio, and how sterile is it? You will find the answers to these questions in the article below!

Symptoms of an inflamed Shenmen piercing

Inflammation has typical signs that are not hard to notice, and they often make everyday life miserable.

The symptoms of an inflamed Shenmen piercing may include:

  • The piercing site is red and swollen.
  • The piercing area is painful, which may be mild or even quite severe.
  • Around the piercing, the skin may feel warmer to the touch because of the inflammation.
  • White or yellowish pus-like discharge may come from the wound.
  • Your ear may itch, or you may feel a burning sensation.
  • An inflamed lump may appear at the entry and exit holes of the piercing.

Not all symptoms will necessarily appear at once! It is important, however, that if even one of the signs listed above appears, you contact your piercing specialist as soon as possible!

These causes can lead to an inflamed piercing

Even with regular piercing care, it can happen (in a small percentage of cases) that the pierced area becomes inflamed. In most cases this happens 4–5 weeks after the piercing, if dirt gets into the wound.

An inflamed Shenmen piercing is usually caused by the following:

  • Infection: As a result of inadequate hygiene during the piercing or the aftercare. This is also why it is important to always choose a trustworthy studio!
  • Irritation: It can be caused by frequently touching or rubbing the piercing, or by wearing jewellery made of an unsuitable material.
  • Allergy: It can be triggered by an allergic reaction to the jewellery material.

What to do if your Shenmen piercing is inflamed

1. Clean it gently but thoroughly: Wash your hands with lukewarm soapy water, then gently clean the piercing. After the piercing has been placed, it is a good idea to spray the area morning and evening with Medical Piercing’s own aftercare spray while it is inflamed; then, 2 weeks after the piercing, 1 drop of oil can also go on the wound. You can buy the aftercare kit at our studio.

2. Do not remove the jewellery: Removing the jewellery may cause an even worse infection or an abscess.

3. Take medication recommended by a doctor: If the inflammation is severe, you may need a medical examination; the doctor may also prescribe antibiotics or an anti-inflammatory ointment. Always use these as recommended!

4. “Rest” your ear: Avoid touching or moving the piercing. Keep your ear clean and sterile!

If the symptoms of inflammation do not go away or get worse, it is important to see a doctor immediately so that you receive the right treatment! Treating the inflammation properly can help avoid more serious complications and can support faster healing.

How is a Shenmen piercing done?

The conditions of the piercing can differ from studio to studio. We have heard of many kinds of procedures, which is exactly why it is important, once you have picked the studio where you would like to have your Shenmen piercing done, to find out about what to do beforehand and what you need to know.

At the studio we first carry out an assessmentto make sure that you really need the Shenmen piercing and that it may really be effective for you. We also like to do this because it gives us a full picture of your problem, and we can screen out any contraindications.

So during the assessment we ask you about your complaints and your medical history, and we assess the condition of your ear as well. This is followed by pinpoint-accurate point location, with which we reliably mark where your piercing will go, so we cannot make a mistake.

After this, the piercing itself takes only a few moments. The pain felt at that point is entirely individual; according to our guests, it feels like an insect bite, but it passes once the piercing has been placed.

For the first piercing, by the way, the jewellery is made of medical-grade metal, which we sterilise in an autoclave at the studio.

After the piercing we don’t let you go straight away either; we chat a little while you are still sitting in the chair, check that you are all right, and if you don’t feel faint (many people are afraid of needles and feel unwell because of it), then we let you go home.

How to care for your piercing you can hear from us after the piercing, but just to be on the safe side, you will also receive it by e-mailafter you leave the studio. From these you can also learn how to treat an inflamed Shenmen piercing. This will be followed by regular information e-mails that answer all your questions. If you still don’t get satisfactory answers, we will add you to our closed Facebook migraine group , where you can share experiences with others in the same situation.

And two weeks later we will call youto check that everything is fine with you and your piercing, whether you have managed to care for your Shenmen piercing thoroughly, and how your new jewellery has worked. If there is a problem, we will arrange a new appointment for the piercing.

Inflamed Shenmen piercing? It can be treated! A trustworthy piercing studio matters too! Book with us at our Budapest, Kecskemét or Szolnok locations!

* The total number of piercings was higher than this. The statistic is not official. The piercing is not an officially recognised therapeutic device but a wellbeing piece of jewellery, whose effectiveness is based on experience and feedback.
