Shenmen piercing for tinnitus?

Few people think of it, but with tinnitus a preliminary medical examination is definitely worthwhile, to find out what lies behind the complaint and to start the right, targeted treatment. As a complement to this, we recommend the Shenmen piercing!

But how has it worked for others? How is it placed? What should you look out for afterwards? How much does it cost? You can find the answers to these questions in our article below!

Shenmen piercing for tinnitus?

Tinnitus affects many people, but rarely is there a serious problem behind it. The noise a person hears in this case can differ from person to person. It may be, for example, rumbling, ringing, buzzing, etc. It can be triggered by an ear infection, long-term noise exposure, old age or even jaw joint problems. More and more can be done about tinnitus. If some abnormality was found during the medical examination, it is worth having it treated. In addition, an excellent complement may be the Shenmen piercing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine distinguishes 5 main acupuncture points in the ear, known as NADA points, and the best known of these is the Shenmen point. The word Shenmen means “divine gate”. By stimulating this special point, located in the uppermost segment of the outer ear, a calm, relaxed state can be achieved, and it may also have a positive effect on many other problems.

The Shenmen piercing is a piece of wellbeing body jewellery that is placed in this Shenmen point.

A In a 2009 study by Medical Acupuncture the effects of ear acupressure on tinnitus were examined. According to the results, tinnitus decreased with pressure on the acupressure points of the ear (including the Shenmen point), but this result was not significant, so further research on the subject would be needed.

This is what a Shenmen piercing looks like

The steps of placing a Shenmen piercing are almost the same from studio to studio. There may be one or two points that differ in order or are not treated separately from the previous step. At Medical Piercing, the piercing is done in 6 steps. Let’s look at them in detail!

1. Assessment: The first and most important step is for the specialist you have chosen to assess your needs regarding the piercing, examine the condition of your ear and ask about your medical history if you have any complaint or problem. You can ask us anything! If you are worried about the pain, it is always worth sharing these worries with the specialist, who can then offer help and support during the process. We always explain the process and answer any questions you have. Then we start the preparation.

2. Preparation: Before the piercing, our specialist makes sure that every instrument is sterile-packed and ready for the procedure. This may include wearing medical gloves, using disinfectant solutions, and preparing sterile needles and jewellery.

At our studio we sterilise the instruments in an autoclave – and even your first jewellery, made of medical-grade metal!

3. Determining the exact place of the piercing: First, we mark the place of your piercing on your ear. The Shenmen piercing is usually located in the upper part of the ear cartilage. Before choosing the point, it is important to take into account the anatomy of your ear and your aesthetic preferences.

4. Placing the Shenmen piercing: Once the place has been marked, your piercer begins the piercing. For this we use a sterile needle, which is usually guided to the right place with the help of a piercing needle. It is important to carry out this process quickly and decisively, to minimise pain and injury.

5. Inserting the jewellery: As soon as the needle has passed through the ear, we quickly insert the jewellery. This jewellery may be a ring or a bar, depending on the type of piercing you prefer.

6. Final steps: Once the jewellery is in, our specialist cleans and disinfects the area, then gives you instructions on caring for the piercing and on the healing process.

This usually includes using disinfectant solutions, cleaning the jewellery gently and touching it as little as possible during the healing period.

What to look out for after the piercing

After the Shenmen piercing has been placed, proper hygiene and care are especially important for a successful healing process. The healing time of a Shenmen piercing is usually 6–8 weeks.

A few useful hygiene rules worth following:

  • Always wash your hands!
  • Disinfect it!
  • Avoid dirt and dirty water!
  • Don’t fiddle with your piercing!
  • Don’t remove the jewellery too early!
  • Watch out for signs of inflammation!

IMPORTANT! These are only general guidelines; always follow the specific instructions and advice given by your piercing specialist. During the healing period, pay extra attention to the piercing and the surrounding areas to ensure successful healing and to minimise the risk of infection.

* The total number of piercings was higher than this. The statistic is not official. The piercing is not an officially recognised therapeutic device but a wellbeing piece of jewellery, whose effectiveness is based on experience and feedback.
