Daith piercing for migraine?

The Daith and the migraine piercing can be mentioned more or less in the same breath, but the exact location of each is different. Perhaps fewer people know the Daith piercing, even though many of our guests have already reported its anxiety-reducing effect.

If you are interested in what the Daith piercing is, in which cases it has already helped and how it worked, this article is for you! You can also find out which ear it is worth having a Daith piercing in, in which cases it has not been recommended, and I have also summarised some important information about caring for it.

What is the Daith piercing?

The Daith piercing is easy to confuse with the migraine piercing. While the latter is located in the tragus, the former is pierced into the inner fold of the ear. Like the migraine piercing, the Daith started out as fashion jewellery, and in the Western world research only began later, after its positive effects were observed.

In which cases can it help?

The Daith piercing has already helped many of our guests with anxiety , and based on the feedback it can be said that the migraine complaints resulting from it were also eased.

How does the Daith piercing work against migraine?

According to acupuncture, in the ear there are special points that are connected to the meridians (energy channels), and by stimulating them we can have an effect on the organs connected to them.

Based on the feedback of several thousand of our guests, we can say the following about the Daith piercing:

  • pain may decrease / go away
  • it may have a positive influence on general wellbeing
  • anxiety may decrease
  • sleep may be of better quality

For the time being there is still no explicit research evidence for the Daith piercing, but the effect of the migraine piercing has already been shown by the following research:

Carried out by the London Migraine Clinic, in a study examined people with migraine who had received a Daith piercing.

The results of the study are as follows:

·75% of the participants state that after the piercing was placed their headaches eased significantly or went away completely

·82% of those with the piercing are completely satisfied

·only 11% reported that they did not notice a significant change after the piercing

According to the doctors who carried out the study, Dr Chris Blatchley and Professor Arnold Wilkins, this procedure puts less strain on the body than constant use of medication, and if the piercing is done by the right specialist, the rate of positive results may be even higher.

Does it matter which ear the Daith piercing goes in?

Unlike the Shenmen piercing, with the Daith piercing it matters which ear it is pierced on if it is about migraine complaints resulting from anxiety. Just like with the migraine piercing, the Daith piercing goes on the side where the headache is most often located.

If the aim is to ease anxiety, it does not matter which ear the Daith piercing goes in.

In which cases is the Daith piercing not recommended?

For the time being there is no official contraindication for the Daith piercing, but according to some specialists, in the case of the following chronic illnesses it is worth considering carefully whether to have a wellbeing body jewel pierced:

· diabetes

· autoimmune problems

· haemophilia

· regular use of blood-thinning medication

What should I watch out for with a Daith piercing?

Just like with the migraine piercing, with the Daith the healing time 8–12 weeks, since it is cartilage tissue.

Until then there are certain aftercare tasks that during the healing time of the piercing that you must follow. These are:

  • After the piercing has been placed, it is a good idea to spray the area morning and evening with Medical Piercing’s own aftercare spray while it is inflamed; then, 2 weeks after the piercing, 1 drop of oil can also go on the wound. You can buy the aftercare kit at our studio.

The piercing must not be moved for 10 days; after that, however, it is a good idea to move it gently once a day, ideally during the evening cleaning.

  1. Don’t touch or fiddle with the jewellery and the area around the wound.
  2. Don’t clean it with alcohol.
  3. Avoid soaking your ear in a bath or swimming pool.
  4. Avoid sunbeds, saunas and strong sunshine.
  5. Make sure that no cosmetics get near the ear.
  6. A under no circumstances change the jewellery before full healing for another piece! Always wait until the wound has healed.

Our wellbeing piercings do not count as a cure and do not replace medical treatment; the description of their effectiveness is based on our guests’ feedback.

* The total number of piercings was higher than this. The statistic is not official. The piercing is not an officially recognised therapeutic device but a wellbeing piece of jewellery, whose effectiveness is based on experience and feedback.
