Migraine piercing placement – which ear and where is it pierced?

The migraine piercing is placed in a hard-to-reach spot on the ear, so the piercing requires precise work. Which ear it is placed in also depends on which side the headache most often develops on. In certain cases it may also be necessary to have a migraine piercing in both ears.

If you would like to know more about the migraine piercing and where it is placed, this article is for you! You will also find out how the piercing is done and what to do in case of inflammation.

About the migraine piercing

Acupuncture goes back to ancient Chinese traditions. Not only on the ear but also on the soles of the feet, the palms and indeed the whole body, certain points were identified, stimulation of which can have positive effects on the human body.

It was then observed that certain points in the area of the outer ear are connected to the organs, and these were written down.

The migraine piercing is also placed in such a special point, and several thousand of our guests have found it effective not only for migraine but also for other headaches.

The piercing began to spread in the West in the 1990s. At first, young people started using it only as a fashion. Then, based on their own experience, they noticed that they had fewer or no headaches since the piercing was placed, and that their anxiety had also decreased significantly.

Migraine piercing placement – this is where it goes

As it is a hard-to-reach point, determining the place of the migraine piercing requires great attention. Today modern, special point location is used to mark it.

The placement of the migraine piercing is in the fold above the ear canal, in a small, winding piece of cartilage, so we are talking about a hard-to-reach spotthat requires precision to pierce.

Only migraine piercing specialists with a lot of experience are able to place the migraine piercing precisely, which is exactly why it is important to look into studios thoroughly before you have your ear pierced.

Which ear is the migraine piercing placed in?

The placement of the migraine piercing also depends on which side the migraine appears on. In many cases we use this to decide which ear to put the jewellery in. So it always goes in the ear on the side where your head hurts most often.

However, it may happen that a migraine piercing is needed in both ears, if the headache is on both sides, or if one has not proved effective enough.

How much does placing a migraine piercing hurt?

Determining the place of the migraine piercing requires a thorough preliminary examination and point location. This is the longest part of the process, and that is exactly why the piercing itself is short and takes only a few moments.

So far every one of my guests has been surprised by this. They put it like this: “it was as if an insect had just bitten me”. But this passed as soon as I inserted the migraine piercing jewellery made of medical-grade metal.

However, we are all unique, and it follows from this that we also perceive pain differently. What is nothing to you may cause someone else severe pain.

The perception of pain may depend on several things, for example:

· your current stress level

· how tired you are

· in women, the menstrual cycle

For many people, this unpleasant moment is soon forgottenonce they experience the beneficial effects of the migraine piercing.

How is the place of the migraine piercing located and pierced?

At the Medical Piercing studio, first of all I carry out an assessment before the piercing. This is also important so that I can assess all your needs in this regard and whether a migraine piercing is really worth it for you. During this I examine the condition of your ear and ask you about your complaints. If you have any related medical history, we will cover that as well.

A device-assisted measurement is used to determine where the migraine piercing goes, so we can be one hundred per cent sure that the jewellery goes in the right place.

After this, the piercing takes only a few moments, which – as my guests have put it – involves only a feeling like an insect bite. We must not forget, however, that the perception of pain also depends on the individual! If you know you are more sensitive to it, or even tend to faint, I pay attention to that too, and after the piercing we chat a little more while you are still in the chair, until you feel better. Meanwhile, I also observe the condition of the migraine piercing site.

Your first migraine piercing will be jewellery made of medical-grade metal sterilised in an autoclave . If everything went well during the piercing, I let you go home with it and with your guarantee card. After that, you regularly receive information from me by e-mail, for example about how to care for the migraine piercing site.

What is more, I will add you to my private Facebook migraine group, where you can get in touch with others in the same situation and share experiences.

I think it is important not to leave my guests on their own later on either, which is exactly why I contact you after 2 weeks to check that everything is fine, whether you feel any effect, and to discuss the next steps.

What should you do if the migraine piercing site becomes inflamed?

Despite every effort and careful aftercare, in a small percentage of cases the migraine piercing site may become inflamed. As we are talking about a wound, which can easily become irritated, in certain cases even the most careful piercing and attention are not enough to avoid this.

The following symptoms may indicate a problem:

  • the piercing site is painful, with a burning sensation
  • the ear has become swollen
  • the area is red, throbbing, perhaps hot to the touch
  • the piercing site is producing pus

In this case be sure to see your migraine piercing specialist, who can help solve the problem.

Until then, by following my advice below, you can also do a lot to keep the migraine piercing site healthy:

  1. After the piercing has been placed, it is a good idea to spray the area morning and evening with Medical Piercing’s own aftercare spray while it is inflamed; then, 2 weeks after the piercing, 1 drop of oil can also go on the wound. You can buy the aftercare kit at our studio.
  2. Always keep the migraine piercing site as sterile as possible.

Our wellbeing piercings do not count as a cure and do not replace medical treatment; the description of their effectiveness is based on our guests’ feedback.

Looking for a migraine piercing specialist who takes pride in their work and works in sterile conditions? At my studio I use autoclave sterilisation! Book with me!

* The total number of piercings was higher than this. The statistic is not official. The piercing is not an officially recognised therapeutic device but a wellbeing piece of jewellery, whose effectiveness is based on experience and feedback.
