Allergies in brief
An allergy is an immune system reaction in which the body produces an excessive response to certain substancesthat are usually harmless to other people. These substances are called allergens. There are many different forms of allergy, including food allergy, pollen allergy (hay fever), animal hair allergy, mite allergy (e.g. dust mites), allergy to medical products, and allergies caused by other environmental factors.

Allergic reactions are usually caused by an excessive response of the immune system on contact with allergens. The immune system then produces antibodies that protect the body against potential dangers. In allergic reactions, however, these antibodies wrongly react to substances that are usually harmless, which causes the symptoms, for example a blocked nose, watery eyes, skin rashes or, in more severe cases, even breathlessness.
Allergies can be treated in several ways, including avoiding the allergen, taking antihistamines and other medicines to relieve the symptoms, and immunotherapy, in which the body is gradually accustomed to the allergen in order to reduce the severity of allergic reactions. The risk of allergic reactions can be reduced if the individual knows the cause that triggers the allergy and tries to minimise contact with it.
As piercing specialists, we are always asked how effective the Shenmen piercing is against allergies. Is it commonly used? That is what we discuss below.
Shenmen piercing for allergies – is it effective?
A Shenmen piercing is a wellbeing body jewellery placed in the outer cartilage area of the ear. This is an acupuncture point also used in Chinese medicine, the Shenmen (in English, “the Divine Gate”).
Allergic rhinitis (a runny nose) is a global problem, and it affects about 10–40% of the world’s population.
Our guests most often report that allergic nose and eye symptoms may decrease after the piercing is placed.
The most important part of treating allergies is avoiding the allergen triggers, as well as medical treatments, such as the use of antihistamines or allergy medicines. If you struggle with such problems, it may be worth consulting an allergist to develop the optimal treatment plan, and after that, consider trying what the Shenmen piercing might be like against allergy symptoms!
It is important to note that every person is unique, and what may be effective for one person may not be equally effective for others. That is why individual medical advice and an individual treatment plan are always important in dealing with health problems.
This is how a Shenmen piercing is placed
At our studio, one of the most important principles is to reduce any discomfortthat placing the piercing may involve. That is exactly why we first have a little chat, and as part of it we also carry out an assessment . This is also important so that we can assess all your needs regarding the piercing and whether a Shenmen piercing is really worth it for you. Of course, during the assessment we examine the condition of your ear and ask you about your complaints, and we also cover whether you have had any medical history related to allergies.
The Shenmen piercing is placed on a spot we mark based on precise point location, which ensures that the piercing goes exactly onto the right acupuncture point.
After all this, the piercing really takes only a few secondsand involves only a feeling like an insect bite. It is important to bear in mind, however, that the perception of pain depends greatly on the individual, so how much a Shenmen piercing hurts can only be decided through experience. If you know you are afraid of needles, are more sensitive to discomfort or even tend to faint, we pay attention to that too. This is another reason why we don’t let you go straight away: after the piercing we chat a little more while you are still in the chair, until you feel better. Meanwhile, we also observe the condition of the Shenmen piercing site and how you are feeling.
If everything has gone well and you feel completely fine, we let you go home. Even after that, we don’t leave you on your own. You regularly receive information from us by e-mail, for example how you should care for the site of your Shenmen piercing.
At our studio, the first Shenmen piercing jewellery you receive is made of medical-grade metal sterilised in an autoclave.
We also think it is important to stay in touch with our guests later on, in case any problem arises. That is exactly why we contact you after 2 weeksto check that everything is fine, whether the Shenmen piercing for allergy has worked for you, and to discuss any further steps.
Our wellbeing piercings do not count as a cure and do not replace medical treatment; the description of their effectiveness is based on our guests’ feedback.
